HONOURS COMMITTEE
a) An Honours Committee consisting of Chairman, Hon Secretary, Club Captain, Training Officers, and One Co-opted Member shall meet on a date to be agreed, one month before the date of the annual Presentation Evening / Dinner Dance to evaluate
nominations for the various awards.
b) Recipients of all Honours from the previous years are required to have returned their Trophies/ Plaques to the Honours Committee prior to the date of their meeting, in order to allow them to be prepared for the current nominations.
NOMINATIONS FOR ANNUAL AWARDS
a) Any fully paid up member of the Club may nominate any eligible person(s), for any award, in the various categories via the appropriate forms to the Hon Secretary two weeks before the meeting of the Honours Committee, for appraisal.
b) The nominations should be accompanied by a short written account as to why the nomination is being submitted
TROPHIES / PLAQUES
a) The Successful Nominees for each annual award shall receive the appropriate Trophy /Plaque for that award.
b) They shall also receive a framed certificate denoting the award given.
ANNUAL AWARDS NOMINATED BY MEMBERS
Lifeguard Of The Year
Award: The “G E Bailey Memorial Shield” plus a commemorative framed certificate
Eligibility: Any operational member of the Club who is over 16 years of age, with or without a lifeguard qualification.
Selection Criteria:
Extraordinary dedication and commitment to the aims and objectives of the Club and all its lifeguarding duties. 1) Hours committed to “operational” duties and active devotion to all aspects of work on behalf of the Club. 2) Professionalism displayed in rescues and duties. 3) A wholesome attitude of care to all fellow members and the public. 4) Enthusiastic support for all Club activities
Assistant Lifeguard Of The Year
Award: The “G E Bailey Memorial Shield” plus a commemorative framed certificate
Eligibility: A member of the Club aged 16 years or under, with or without qualification.
Selection Criteria: Extraordinary dedication and commitment to the aims and objectives of the Club and all its lifeguarding duties. 1 Hours committed to operational duties and active devotion to all aspects of work on behalf of the Club 2 Professionalism displayed in rescues and duties 3 A wholesome attitude of care to all fellow members and the public 4 Enthusiastic support for all Club activities
Rookie Of The Year
Award: The “Avril Hendy Memorial Shield” plus a commemorative framed certificate
Eligibility: A member of the Club aged 14 years or under, with or without qualification.
Selection Criteria: 1 Showing very active involvement in the Club’s Rookie Programme
Boatman Of The Year
Award The “John Stone Shield” plus a commemorative framed certificate
Eligibility: Any operational member of the Club, with or without a lifeguard qualification.
Selection Criteria: 1 Evidence of development, commitment, positive attitude and dedication to boat activity throughout the year. 2 Showing continuous improvement in boat skills and boat maintenance
Training Shield
Award The “Peter Fraser Shield” plus a commemorative framed certificate
Eligibility: Open to any member of the Club actively engaged in any form of training or development in the interest of the Club, its members or individuals outside the Club
Selection Criteria: 1 Evidence of very active teaching of lifesaving, life support, lifeguarding or development of trainers &/ or assessors
2 Evidence of very active personal development in lifesaving, life support or lifeguarding
Associate Of The Year
Award The “Peter Spinney Memorial Shield” plus a commemorative framed certificate
Eligibility: Any fully paid up member – Associate or Supporter Member
Selection Criteria: 1 Enthusiastic commitment to the objectives of the Club, especially in the areas of fundraising or social development 2 All round support to the Club
Services To Lifesaving
Award The “Joan & Carl Sullivan Trophy” plus a commemorative framed certificate
Eligibility: Any persons(s) from outside or within the Club or any agency or organisation. Selection Criteria: Awarded in recognition of services, support or any other consideration that benefits the aims and objectives of the Club or lifesaving in general.

President’s Award
Decision made by the President of RLSS Poole Lifeguard.
Awarded at the President’s discretion (not necessarily annually)
Award The “John Howes Trophy” plus a commemorative framed certificate
Eligibility: Open to any fully paid up member(s) of the Club in any membership category. Selection Criteria: Awarded to any individual or group who throughout the year give unselfishly of their time, energy and consideration, in the interest of others, and have shown an attitude of immense care towards the needs of others.
OTHER AWARDS
RLSS Poole Lifeguard Commendation – Recognition of Meritorious Actions
This award is only awarded on occasions when meritorious actions have taken place and therefore is not necessarily awarded on an annual basis, equally it is not restricted to once per year. This award can also be awarded at any suitable time during the year that would best fit the occasion/person that it is being awarded for/to.
Award A commemorative framed certificate
Eligibility: This award is awarded to any member(s) of the Club who have in the eyes of the Club carried out actions over and above that deemed to be part of their normal Club activities in the interest of saving/rescuing others Selection Criteria:
1) Anyone who has used their lifesaving/ lifeguarding skills to assist others over and above normal course of duties. 2) Anyone who has used their lifesaving/ lifeguarding skills in the preservation of life outside Club Activities
Training Bursaries
Award This award has been withdrawn and the details below supersede the original bursaries Eligibility: Any fully paid up member of the Club wishing to further their skills or qualifications in lifesaving or lifeguarding is encouraged to approach the exec committee with regards sponsorship towards the cost of courses. Selection Criteria: 1 May be awarded to any member who has shown very high degree of selfless commitment in training or teaching environment
The History of the Club Awards
The G E Bailey – Lifeguard of the Year – and – Assistant Lifeguard of the Year Awards
G E Bailey, grandmother to Stuart Bailey (who was a founder Member of the Club and Chairman for many years), continually supported the Club during its first year at numerous fundraising events. She also attended the first ever Boxing Day Demo and made a major donation towards the Club’s funds. She passed away during the early part of 1976. The trophies were presented by Stuart in her memory.
The Lifeguard of the Year and the Cadet of the Year trophies were donated in 1976.
The Avril Hendy – Rookie of the Year Award
Avril first became involved with the club as mother of two of the Club’s members, Andy and Stuart. Initially she supported fund-raising events and later became actively involved in the Executive Committee, holding various positions including Membership Secretary which she still held at the time of her death in 2002. She will long be remembered as the friendly face collecting swimming fees on Club nights and for knowing the names of all the Rookies. The Rookie of the Year trophy was presented in her memory
The trophy was donated in 2002 and it became known as the Rookie of the Year in 2004
The John Stone – Boatman of the Year Award
John, as 1st Promoter and 1st President of the Club was hugely influential in gaining commercial support through Gresham Life Assurance, which paved the way for the Clubs 1st Inshore Rescue Boat ‘Gresham’. He remained vigorously involved with the Club until moving to South Africa in the 1990’s. John donated the Coxswain of the Year trophy in 1976. It’s name was changed to Boatman of the Year in 1992.
The Peter Fraser Shield – Training Shield
Peter – before retiring to spend time more time with his family brought a dedication for teaching Life Saving Skills to the Club. He competed at National Level Life Saving competitions and was later involved with training younger competitors. Peter donated the award to the Club in 1981
The Peter Spinney – Associate Member Award
Peter and Madge, parents of a Club member Kevin, were heavily involved with fundraising events during the Club’s earlier years. Madge presented the trophy in memory of Peter. Madge donated the award in 1986
The Joan & Carl Sullivan – Services to Life Saving Award
Carl, as Manager of the Dolphin Swimming Pool, was very supportive of the Club and its use of the Dolphin Pool and its facilities for many years. His two sons Jason and Stephen were both encouraged to become members. He was also actively involved with assisting competition training for many years.
Carl and his wife Joan presented the Club with the award in 1987.
The John Howes – President’s Award
John has been active in Life Saving for many years and was one of the persons who encouraged a young group of people to form the Club in 1975. John was very active in Life Saving through his involvement with the Police and then as an active member of the RLSS Wessex Branch. It was through his role as President of the RLSS Wessex Branch that he approached the Club to host the Wessex Challenge Competition at Sandbanks in 1990. He happily took over the Role of Club President when it became available in 1992. John donated the award in 1996.
